Wondering where the term "cream tea" came from? The Duchess of Bedford made afternoon tea popular everywhere in England in the early 1800's, which is a sort of lunch meal in between breakfast and supper. Cream tea developed when railroads expanded, allowing Londoners to go to Devon, Cornwall, and other lovely places for the weekend, where clotted cream is most famous. Cream tea evolved into a light meal of scones, clotted cream, jam and tea that became all the rage, and continues to this day in both Great Britain, and the US.
